UK Plumbing Demand Report 2026: Searches, Clicks & Risk

Emergency plumbing demand across 250 UK towns, 409,100 monthly searches, click costs, and the frost and flood risk behind burst pipes. Free to cite.

Key findings, free to cite
  • Plumbing is the highest-volume emergency trade in our data: 409,100 Google searches a month across 250 UK towns and cities.
  • It also carries the most emergency intent, 52,930 searches a month (12.9%) are explicitly urgent ("emergency plumber", "burst pipe").
  • A typical plumbing click costs £6.46 (median), £6.84 volume-weighted; emergency-intent clicks run about 2.5x higher (median £15.92).
  • Individual emergency clicks read as high as £147.88 ("emergency plumber greenwich"), but those sit on near-empty auctions (about 70 searches a month) and are artefacts, not sustainable rates. We explain why below.

This is an open data report on emergency plumbing demand in the United Kingdom, compiled from live Google Ads search data, census figures and a per-town weather-risk classification. Every figure is sourced in the methodology below, and is free to cite with attribution to GetTheCall.

Plumbing is the UK's biggest emergency-trade market

Of the four emergency trades we track, plumbing generates by far the most search demand: 409,100 searches a month, more than double roofing and more than heating and electrical combined in raw volume. It is also the trade where the emergency doesn't wait, a burst pipe can discharge hundreds of litres an hour, which is why 12.9% of plumbing searches carry explicit emergency intent, the highest emergency share of any trade in the dataset.

Where plumbing demand concentrates

These are the ten highest-volume plumbing markets. London alone accounts for nearly 16,000 searches a month, but the north and the Scottish central belt are strongly represented, plumbing demand is genuinely national.

The most expensive plumbing clicks, and why the extremes mislead

Plumbing shows the highest click prices in the dataset, but this is exactly where the numbers need care. Restricting to keywords with real demand, 100+ searches a month, so the price reflects a genuine auction, the priciest standard plumbing clicks are London suburbs where firms bid hard against each other.

About the £147.88 click

You may see "emergency plumber greenwich" quoted at £147.88, the highest single CPC in our data. Treat it with scepticism. That keyword draws only about 70 searches a month; "emergency plumber woolwich" (£131.60) and "emergency plumber wood green" (£124.49) get roughly 10 each. On auctions that thin, one advertiser running "maximise clicks" with no budget cap can set a headline price nobody sustainably pays, a £147.88 click is unprofitable even at a 100% booking rate. It reflects a broken keyword auction, not what plumbers actually pay. The robust figure is the median emergency plumbing click: £15.92.

The weather behind the callouts

Plumbing emergencies are seasonal in a way roofing is not: they spike with cold. Of the 239 risk-classified towns, 86 (36%) carry a hard frosts flag, the freeze-thaw cycle that splits pipework and bursts external feeds, and 88 (36.8%) carry a flood risk flag, where drainage backs up and gullies overflow in heavy rain. Together, frost and flood are the two dominant drivers of the burst-pipe and blocked-drain callouts that make up urgent plumbing work.

What plumbers actually charge

Emergency plumbing callouts typically run £90 to £350 for the callout and first hour on site, with boiler and larger pipe repairs reaching £500-£2,000 or more. These are tradesperson-set rates; the search and click figures above measure demand for the work, not its price.

Methodology & sources

Search & click-cost data: Google Ads monthly-average search volume and cost-per-click via the DataForSEO Keywords Data API (geo: United Kingdom), pulled 17 June 2026. Volumes sum the Google Ads monthly averages across the plumbing keyword variants queried per town and are a relative demand signal, not unique searchers.

How we handle click costs: Google Ads CPC on very-low-volume keywords is noisy, a single unconstrained bidder can push a near-empty auction to £100+ a click. So headline CPCs are reported as the median and the volume-weighted mean (both down-weight thin outliers), and "most expensive" tables are limited to keywords with 100+ searches a month. Extreme readings are shown only as labelled outliers, with their search volume.

Demographics: ONS Census 2021 (England & Wales), National Records of Scotland 2022, NISRA 2021 (Northern Ireland).

Weather-risk classification: GetTheCall's per-town local-conditions model across 11 hazard categories; 239 of 250 towns carry at least one flag.

The "modelled paid-search market" figure (monthly searches × volume-weighted CPC) is illustrative, a ceiling estimate, not measured spend. On GetTheCall, plumbers pay nothing per click and a flat fee only once a customer confirms they chose them on the call.
