Apprenticeship Funding Changed in August 2026: What Trade Firms Need to Know

Free apprenticeship training for eligible under-25s began on 1 August 2026. A practical summary for small UK roofing, plumbing, electrical and heating firms.

What changed
  • From 1 August 2026, the government says apprenticeship training is fully funded for eligible under-25s.
  • The wider package advertises support of up to £8,000 for SMEs hiring young apprentices, subject to the scheme rules and the apprentice's eligibility.
  • This can reduce the training cost, but it does not remove an employer's duties on wages, supervision, safety, insurance and employment law.

The government announced the change on 28 July as part of a package intended to expand technical training, including construction routes such as plumbing, bricklaying and decorating. The funding change began on 1 August. For a small trade business that has enough work to train someone properly, it may make an apprentice easier to afford, but it is funding support rather than a ready-made hire.

What the announcement actually confirms

The official announcement says eligible under-25 apprenticeship training will be fully funded and describes up to £8,000 of support for small and medium-sized employers hiring young apprentices. It also points to National Insurance relief for apprentices under 25. The exact amount and route depend on the apprentice, employer and programme, so confirm the current terms before putting a figure into a job advert or cash-flow forecast.

Read the Department for Education and Department for Work and Pensions announcement, then use the linked apprenticeship service guidance to check eligibility for the specific standard and candidate.

What a small trade firm should check first

  • There is enough supervised work. An apprentice needs planned training, not only the jobs nobody else wants.
  • The right standard exists. Match the role to the current apprenticeship standard and an approved training provider before promising a start date.
  • The wage and employment costs still fit. Funding for training is not the same as funding every hour of wages, van time, tools, PPE and supervision.
  • Your insurance and safety paperwork cover the hire. Employers' liability insurance, risk assessments and age-appropriate supervision need to be ready before day one.

A sensible hiring sequence

Start with the work, not the grant. Write down which repeatable tasks can be taught safely, who will supervise them, how much non-billable training time the diary can carry and what qualified capacity the business expects to gain. Then speak to a training provider and confirm the funding position in writing. Only after that should you recruit.
